At the beginning of the launch of Defender, the car was equipped with a 2.5-liter inline four cylinder turbocharged diesel engine, initially known as 200TDi, with a maximum power of 80kW (108PS) and a maximum torque of 264N · m.
In 1998, in response to increasingly stringent global emission standards, Defender replaced its previous diesel engine with a 2.5-liter inline five cylinder turbocharged diesel engine called Td5. It is worth noting that on the occasion of Land Rover’s 50th anniversary in 1998, Defender also launched a special edition model equipped with the then Range Rover 4.0-liter V8 gasoline engine.
During the period from 1997 to 2000, due to the acquisition of Land Rover by BMW at that time, Defender also added the use of the BMW M52 2.8-liter inline six cylinder gasoline engine, with a maximum power of 142kW (193PS) and a maximum torque of 280N · m.
In 2007, due to the ill-fated Land Rover being acquired by Ford as early as 2000, in order to keep up with emission regulations, Defender replaced the Td5 diesel engine with a 2.4-liter inline four cylinder diesel engine from Ford.
Apart from the power improvements, Defender has made almost no significant adjustments to other aspects. The exterior still has a square and upright design, and the engine hood adopts a more prominent raised design in details, giving it a more rugged atmosphere.
In terms of interior design, despite the development of the times and the addition of comfort features such as air conditioning, the overall focus is still on practicality.
In terms of off-road performance, Defender still continues the tradition of tough off-road driving, with the front and rear integral axle suspension structure and the mechanical differential lock of the transfer box being the classic elements of Defender in people’s minds.
