In August 1991, the W460 was officially discontinued and the Mercedes Benz G-Wagon, codenamed W461, was launched. It is worth noting that this is not a replacement model of the Mercedes G-Wagon, but a derivative model. W461 is an improved version of W460, mainly used for military vehicles and special purpose vehicles for government agencies.
Firstly, the W461 has cancelled the W460 soft top convertible version, and initially only offers 230 GE four cylinder gasoline power and 290 GD five cylinder diesel power options. Later, a turbocharged five cylinder diesel engine with a 290GE TD option was added, while the 230 GE gasoline engine gradually faded out of the market.
At the beginning of its launch, the W461 basically continued the design of the W460 in terms of appearance and power, and included power steering and four-wheel disc braking as standard configurations.
