In 1991, Mercedes Benz launched the G-Wagen model codenamed W463. Unlike the W461, which is exclusively designed for the military market, the W463 focuses on the civilian market, shifting its focus from being purely off-road to a comfortable, luxurious, and versatile off-road model. Moreover, the previous time-sharing four-wheel drive system has also been replaced by a full-time four-wheel drive system, and the iconic front, middle, and rear electric differential locks have also been introduced. At the beginning of its launch, the W463 only offered a 2.9L diesel power model. Later, in order to meet consumers’ choices, multiple models such as the Mercedes Benz 500 GE, which was equipped with 5.0L V8 power, were introduced one after another. Until 1994, the Mercedes Benz G-Wagon officially adopted a new naming convention and renamed it the Mercedes Benz G-Class, which is also known as the Mercedes Benz G-Class.
As one of the most powerful luxury off-road vehicles in the world, the Mercedes Benz G-Class has always distinguished itself from Mercedes Benz’s usual elegant design. This large box that freely roams the city and wilderness never forgets to showcase its strong and rugged style.
Although there are many models under the Mercedes Benz G-Class, only three chassis models have been used since 1979: the W460 chassis (1979-1991), the W461 chassis (1991 present), and the W463 chassis (1990 present).
By calculation, the W463 series is now 27 years old, which can be considered a grandfather in automobiles. Therefore, the new Mercedes Benz G-Class will be built on the new MHA modular platform. The biggest feature of the improvement is not only an increase of 10mm in width, but also a weight reduction of nearly 400 kilograms. In addition, it will be equipped with a new 4.0-liter twin turbocharged engine (G63 version).
Despite the increase in volume, it achieved a weight reduction of nearly 400 kilograms, indicating a qualitative difference between platforms. In comparison, the W463 series is somewhat inferior.
However, as the W463 series, which has the longest duration and the widest audience, it may not be happy to hear this, because it is he who has made the difference for the Mercedes Benz G-Class.
To talk about the W463, one cannot escape the W461. As a contemporary series of products, the latter has always been referred to as the purest G-class, which makes the W463 atmospheric and breathless. The G-class under W461 is more like an engineering vehicle, without much decoration or electronic equipment, but more focused on overcoming every valley and mountain.
