Land Rover Defender L316 Complete Air Suspension Kit

Land Rover Defender L316 (Classic Old Defender, discontinued from 1990 to 2016)

L316 is the internal chassis code of Land Rover’s classic rugged Defender, with a production cycle spanning from 1990 to 2016. It is a series of large beam hard bridge off-road models and a complete two generation product of the load-bearing new Defender L663 after 2020. It is divided into three wheelbase body types: 90 short two door, 110 long four door, and 130 pickup truck. The iconic square box rivet body, circular retro headlights, exposed hinges, and pure tool based off-road design have been passed down to this day. The whole vehicle adopts a non load bearing trapezoidal beam body, with front and rear solid hard axles matched with spiral spring shock absorbers. The original factory has no air suspension, relying on the long-range hard axle to bring a large suspension stretch. Combined with full-time four-wheel drive, high and low speed transfer case, optional front and rear differential lock, the original factory approach/departure/passage angle, ground clearance and 900mm water wading depth have outstanding advantages among tough cars of the same period. The reliability of rough roads, climbing and crossing is extremely strong, making it a classic model for military and police, outdoor expeditions, and heavy off-road.

The power cycle is mainly based on diesel, with the launch of 200Tdi, 300Tdi, and Td5 five cylinder diesel engines. In the final stage, it will be replaced with 2.4 Td4 and 2.2 Td4 four cylinder turbocharged diesel engines, matched with a 5-speed/6-speed manual transmission. The low-speed torque is sufficient to adapt to towing, heavy loads, and steep slope climbing, but the highway acceleration is weak, the extreme speed is only about 145km/h, and the fuel consumption in urban areas is high. The interior adopts a minimalist tool style, with large areas of hard plastic and exposed metal structures. The sound insulation, shock absorption, and comfort are very limited, and there is no LCD screen or comfortable electronic control configuration. All designs prioritize durability and easy maintenance; The chassis structure is simple and mechanized, and can be easily repaired when anchored in the field. However, common problems are obvious: the main beam, firewall, and wheel arch are prone to corrosion, the suspension rubber sleeve and steering rod wear out quickly, the old diesel engine leaks frequently, and the cooling system malfunctions frequently. The long-term maintenance cost is not low.

The entire series has a pure mechanical four-wheel drive architecture, without complex electronic limited slip, and has great potential for modification. Players often raise the chassis, replace off-road tires, install differential locks, upgrade shock absorbers and fuel tanks. Nowadays, existing cars have both off-road practicality and retro collection value, and the second-hand market is stable; Shortcomings include bumpy road driving, significant wind and road noise on highways, and a noticeable difference in safety compared to modern MPVs/urban SUVs. The original factory cannot adjust the vehicle height, and in order to level and lift the chassis under full load, the entire air suspension system can only be retrofitted later. Moreover, the retrofitted system will weaken the extreme off-road reliability of the original hard bridge.
